Pews

Pews

During a trip to Sweden, I visited many historic churches, all of which had stood for centuries. This painting was inspired by Lund Cathedral, for which construction began around 1100 AD. The wood of the pews reflected both the light from overhead windows and the many years of use by parishioners.

The warm glow of the wood, worn with age but still evoking a sense of welcome and comfort, serve as a visual metaphor for churches everywhere.
