Lighthouse

Lighthouse

Lighthouses have long been a symbol of both guidance and hope — a beacon of light shining out to mariners on dark nights and the expectation of reaching safety during uncertain or hazardous times. This painting expresses those dual emotions, and was based on a beacon from the infamous “Graveyard of the Atlantic” near Cape Hatteras, North Carolina: the Bodie Island Lighthouse. The National Park Service web site has a history of the lighthouse here.

I visited the Cape Hatteras area in July 2005 and developed this painting in April 2008 from my photographs of the lighthouse and surrounding skies.
