Watchman Mtn

When I saw the Watchman, it was after driving south from Bryce Canyon National Park to visit Zion Canyon in Utah. The trip took most of the afternoon, including many stops to take in the amazing scenery that included the remains of ancient volcanoes and the mile-long Zion-Mount Carmel Highway Tunnel. Then I saw it, glowing red-orange in the light of the setting sun, rising 6,545 feet from the canyon floor, a massive spire of layer upon layer of Navajo sandstone. It was like a natural, visual magnet and I hope my painting gives a sense of the wonder I felt when I first saw Watchman.
